It seems that Sian Lloyd, the ginger weathergirl, has written a book about her relationship with Lib Dem MP and Cheeky Boyfriend Lembit Opik. The Mail on Sunday, never known for its sensitive treatment of politicians’ personal lives, has run a somewhat embarrassing picture of him in drinking red wine in bed and the revelation that he once passed out on the toilet. As on many previous occasions, our editorial assistant Hollie summed it up best: “Sorry Sian, but you tapped that.”

Prostitution should be classless

New York governor Eliot Spitzer resigned yesterday after it was revealed he had spent $80,000 on prostitutes. Having spent much of his legal and political career going after public figures with loose morals, he didn’t have much choice. But what interested me was the way the story was reported. The New York Times and the LA Times both referred to a “high-priced prostitution ring”. By contrast, the BBC, the Telegraph, the FT, the Daily Mail and The Guardian are talking about “high-class” hookers. Should we be reading into the distinction?

The Madonna Arms

Madonna behind bar

Madonna and her wife Guy Ritchie have recently bought even more London property, with the new addition of their local boozer, the West End’s Punchbowl, for the tidy sum of £2.5m. Though it’s not most people’s idea of a ‘local’, being smack bang in the middle of Mayfair, Madge apparently has been very taken by the place for some time and just ‘adores’ beer. So we can assume when Mr and Mrs Madonna are not swanning around Wiltshire in flat-caps and britches, shooting pheasant, they’ll be in there.
